Rules of the Natural Physique Association

  1. All members must sign the N.P.A. membership application form before being accepted as a member. N.P.A. membership shall run from the first day of January to the last day of December and is £25 per annum.
  2. You must be a member of the N.P.A. at least 14 days prior to competition.
  3. Entry forms for N.P.A. competitions must be received by the contest organiser by the closing date. Entries after the closing date will not be accepted.
  4. A competitor shall receive a competitors’ ticket at each respective competition upon registration.
  5. All N.P.A. competitions have three judging rounds.

    Male.

    Round One.

    Semi-relaxed quarter turns round. Front, back, and side stances.

    Judges are looking for the best combination of shape, symmetry, balance and proportion, with aesthetic qualities. Feet must be kept flat to the floor.

    Excessive twisting is not allowed.

    Round Two.

    Eight compulsory poses, which are:

    1- front double-biceps; 2 - front lat-spread; 3 - side-chest (either side); 4 - side triceps (either side); 5 - back double-biceps; 6 - back lat-spread; 7 – abdominals and thighs; 8 - most muscular.

    Judges are looking for the best combination of mass, separation, muscularity, shape, symmetry, and condition.

    Competitors will be instructed to do Round 2 immediately following Round 1.

    Each call-out will see the called athlete do the quarter turns and then the compulsory poses, and on completion of both rounds, will then be asked to return to the line-up. Judges will then mark both rounds individually on the sheet.

    Round Three.

    Free posing round. At all N.P.A. competitions, posing shall be of 90 seconds maximum duration. Competitors are encouraged to display their physique to the best of their abilities.

    In the Men's classes, if a class has one entrant, he will be instructed to go onstage with the next class, although he will not be judged against those in that respective class. He will therefore be invited to the British Finals in his respective weight class.

    Female.

    Ladies Physique.

    Round One.

    Judges are looking for the best combination of shape, symmetry, balance and proportion, with aesthetic qualities. Feet must be kept flat to the floor.

    Excessive twisting is not allowed.

    Round Two.

    Eight compulsory poses, which are;

    1 - front double-biceps; 2 - front lat spread; 3 - side-chest (either side); 4 - side triceps (either side); 5 – back double-biceps; 6 – back lat-spread; 7 - abdominals and thighs; 8 - most muscular.

    All poses to be done with closed fists where appropriate.

    Judges are looking for the best combination of mass, separation, muscularity, shape, symmetry, and condition.

    Round Three.

    If there are more than 3 entries in total (i.e 3 lightweight, and 1 heavyweight), in the two classes there will be two separate classes.

    Should there be three entries or less in total (i.e. 1 lightweight ,and 2 heavyweight) then there shall be one Ladies Physique class, with all competitors qualifying for the British Finals in their respective classes.

    Ladies Trained Figure.

    The Trained Figure competitor should show a toned, balanced, shapely body, with aesthetic qualities, exhibiting signs of training with weights whilst always retaining her femininity. The muscle groups should be round and firm in appearance, and the body should have a small amount of body fat, neither being too muscular or too lean. The competitor should be free of deep muscular separation and striations. The skin should be of a smooth and healthy appearance. Poses displaying muscularity are not allowed.

    Round One – Symmetry, Balance and Proportion.

    Excessive twisting is not permitted.

    Round Two – Shape and Tone.

    Seven compulsory poses which are;

    1 - front double biceps; 2 – front lat-spread; 3 – side-chest (either side); 4 – side triceps (either side); 5 – back double biceps; 6 – back lat spread; 7 – any front or side pose of your choice.

    Poses 1, 3, and 5 must be demonstrated with open hands.

    Competitors will be instructed to do Round 2 immediately following Round 1. Each call-out will see the called athlete do the quarter turns and then the compulsory poses, and on completion of both rounds, will then be asked to return to the line-up. Judges will then mark both rounds individually on the sheet.

    Round Three.

    Free posing round. At all N.P.A. competitions, posing shall be of 90 seconds maximum duration. Competitors are encouraged to display their figure to the best of their abilities. Gymnastic moves are optional but will not be marked up above any orthodox posing. The posing round is to display a competitors’ figure to the best of the competitors’ ability – it is not a round that will be judged on athletic or gymnastic prowess.

  6. Costumes for male and female competitors shall be of one, plain, non-reflective colour, except in round three, the free posing round. Female competitors have the option of wearing thong-type costumes.

    Miss Figure competitors shall wear shoes in rounds one and two, but not in round three.

    Female jewellery is restricted to one pair of stud earrings, and wedding ring.

    Male jewellery is restricted to wedding ring only.
  7. Judges will place competitors down to sixth place, and all remaining competitors shall be placed seventh. The competitor with the lowest combined score will place first.

  8. In the event of a tie, the competitor with the lowest places on count-back shall be awarded with higher placing. For example, two competitors both have seven points each. From the judges, one competitor has scores of first, third, and third. The other competitor has scores of second, second, and third. The competitor with the first place shall be awarded with the higher placing. If there is still a tie, the Head Judge shall decide the placings.
  9. When judging the Overall, all judges shall mark from first to last place. The competitor with the lowest total points shall be the winner.
  10. All comments from the judges, for example, asking for a comparison, shall be relayed to the Head Judge, who shall then relay the comparison to the competitors. Judges are not allowed to speak to each other when judging a class.
  11. The Head Judge and another selected N.PA. official shall check and double check all judging scores before handing the result to the M.C.
  12. Competitors in the Under 18’s and Under 21’s must be under their respective ages on the day of the Britain Finals.
  13. Competitors in the Masters class must be over 43 years of age on the day of the competition.
  14. Competitors must show proof of age (i.e. passport or birth certificate) on the day of the competition if competing in the Under 18’s, Under 21’s, and Masters classes.
  15. A Novice competitor is one who has not placed in the top two in a qualifier. Once placed in the top two of a qualifier, the competitor will be invited to the British Finals, and this will be their last chance to compete as a Novice. Once qualified for the Novice Britain Finals you are not allowed to compete in another qualifier as a Novice.
  16. A competitor may only compete in one class per contest, the couples class the exception.
  17. The qualifying classes for the N.P.A. British Finals are;
    Male: Under 21, Masters, Novices, Under 70kg, Under 78kg, 78kg+.

    Female: Figure, Physique Under 55kg, Physique 55kg+.

    Couples.

    All qualifiers shall have a Best Under 18 award, and there shall be an Under 18 class at the N.P.A. British Finals, should there be three or more qualified entries.

    There shall be Best Over 50, and Best Over 60 awards at the NPA British Finals only.

    All NPA competitions shall have Best Presentation awards for each class, unless there is only one entrant in a particular class..

    All qualifiers shall have Male and Female (Physique) Overall awards.
  18. The top two placings in each qualifying class will be invited to the British Finals. Any additional invites shall be at the discretion of the Judges.
  19. The N.P.A. may, at any time and without offering a reason, refuse any new applicant membership, and may withdraw membership to any existing member.
  20. No judges, judging on that particular day, shall be allowed backstage whilst judging.
  21. All members shall observe and follow a proper code of conduct i.e. at competitions and on the internet. Members who bring the association into disrepute will be suspended pending a hearing.
  22. All qualifiers shall have a minimum of five judges at each competition, and the British Finals shall have a minimum of seven judges. Top and bottom scores will be deducted from the scoring.
  23. Defending and previous British Champions will receive a bye to the N.P.A. British Finals where eligible.
  24. Current and past World and / or European Champions will receive a bye to the N.P.A. British Finals.
  25. A competitor who has qualified for the British Finals in one weight class, shall compete in the weight class that he or she weighs in at on the day of the Finals. For example, a competitor may qualify in the Under 70kg class, but on the day of the Britain Finals, should he weigh in at 72kg, he will then be entered in the Under 78kg class.
  26. A competitor selected for a drug test must comply with UK Sports and submit a urine sample. A competitor who refuses to comply will be viewed as a failure, and subsequently will be banned.
  27. To compete in any NPA competition, you must be a UK citizen, or have legal residence in the United Kingdom.
  28. The NPA ‘Rules For Doping Control’ will be in line with UK Sports rules.All NPA members should read the UK Sports rules link to ensure you fully understand what is on the banned list.
  29. Penalties for a positive drug test:

    A failed drug test for all steroids, pro hormones, diuretics, growth hormones, peptides and other listed banned substances carries an obligatory lifetime ban except in the case of some stimulants, narcotics and medicinal substances, where a shorter ban may be imposed at the discretion of the NPA Committee, in consultation with UK Sports.

    Failing to provide a sample, or refusal to do so after one has been requested, will result in a lifetime ban from competition.

    Once a drug test has been requested of an athlete, the subsequent procedure and administration will be carried out by the relevant officials of UK Sports, who will refer results back to the NPA accordingly.

    The NPA is the only Bodybuilding organisation linked to government testing and as such the NPA has in place the best testing programme of any organisation worldwide (i.e. IOC - WADA linked).
